You know what is funny? Actually the whole opera should take place in the 17th century - that make the plot in its details much more logical. For Inquisition - or the Lion's Mouth in Venice in the second half of the 19th century seem ridiculous. However, the costumes are very pleasant to look at, and logic never went together with operas...
